International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)

What IBCA is—and why it matters

The International Big Cat Alliance is a treaty-based inter-governmental organization focused on the conservation of seven “big cats”: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma. It was launched on 9 April 2023, and the Framework Agreement entered into force on 23 January 2025. India hosts the Headquarters and Secretariat, with a Headquarters Agreement signed on 17 April 2025. India has committed ₹150 crore as initial support to create a corpus, infrastructure and meet recurring expenses.

IBCA’s core purpose is to facilitate collaboration, consolidate know-how, and mobilize finance across countries and organizations to secure big cat populations and their habitats worldwide.

Mandate: What IBCA does

Coordinate multi-country programs that improve habitats, strengthen protection, fund research and training, and support community-based conservation.
Act as a legal entity able to sign agreements, receive funds, and run programs through its Secretariat.
Create a shared repository of conservation practices and expertise, and build capacity in range states.

Membership: Who can join and how it’s structured

Who can be a Party? All UN member states (both range and non-range countries). About 95–96 are range countries. Organizations can get Observer status.
Organs: An Assembly (one representative per Party) is the highest decision-making body; it appoints a Director-General and oversees the Secretariat headquartered in India.
Legal standing: The Headquarters Agreement with India grants privileges and immunities like other international organizations.

Riverine island formations in large braided systems; and a national park between two rivers (north vs. south banks)

Braided rivers are restless by design: multiple shifting channels split and rejoin around sandy bars, constantly building and eroding the floodplain. Where bars stabilize—often with a little help from vegetation—riverine islands (“chars/chaporis” in parts of India) emerge. When a national park is located between two such rivers, the landscape becomes a living laboratory of geomorphology, ecology and governance. This article distils the static concepts an aspirant should master, aligned with the syllabus for Physical Geography, Environment & Ecology, Polity-Governance, Disaster Management, and applied S&T.

Geomorphic foundations: why braiding, why islands?

Where is the Gaza–Sinai gateway?

Gaza’s setting: A sliver on the southeastern Mediterranean, wedged between Israel (north & east) and Egypt’s Sinai (southwest). It spans ~365 km² (≈ 140 sq mi); think a narrow coastal plain about 40–41 km long and ~6–12 km wide—one of the world’s densest territories.

Why this matters: In map-based questions, examiners love the tri-junction at Kerem Shalom (where the borders of Israel, Gaza, and Egypt meet) and the Rafah urban cluster straddling the frontier. Label these precisely.

How did this border take shape?

The Philadelphi Corridor (Salah al-Din axis): geography, status, significance

Atmospheric Optics – Iridescent Clouds

Iridescent clouds, also known as irisation, occur when thin parts of clouds display soft pastel colors. This phenomenon is caused by diffraction and interference of sunlight or moonlight by tiny, uniformly sized water droplets or ice crystals. The effect is most commonly observed near the edges of thin clouds, especially when they are newly formed.

Mechanism
When light encounters droplets or ice crystals of nearly uniform size, diffraction bends different wavelengths by slightly different amounts. These diffracted waves interfere with each other, producing visible colors. Smaller droplets produce a larger angular spread of colors, while larger droplets result in smaller, tighter patterns.

Favourable Conditions

Thin, optically transparent clouds with low optical depth.
Droplets or ice crystals with narrow size distribution.
Locations at cloud tops or edges, often in altocumulus, cirrocumulus, lenticular, or pileus clouds.

Asiatic Lion conservation: Gir distribution, Project Lion, coexistence with Maldharis, and big-cat alliances

Geography & ecology of the “Greater Gir” landscape

The Asiatic lion’s only wild population lives in Gujarat’s Saurashtra, across a connected “Greater Gir” mosaic—core protected areas (Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary) plus satellite sanctuaries (Girnar, Pania, Mitiyala) and surrounding agro-pastoral lands and coastal scrub. Recent ecological work and official notes emphasise that lions now use multiple districts beyond the original core, which is why conservation planning treats the unit as a landscape with core–buffer–corridor linkages rather than a single park.

Climatically, the habitat is a dry deciduous–thorn savanna mosaic. Connectivity matters: dispersing sub-adults use riparian strips, scrub, and field margins to step out from the core, which is why linear barriers (roads, wells, fences) and poorly designed canals are perennial risks in the matrix. Habitat suitability therefore hinges on: (a) wild ungulate prey in village peripheries, (b) safe crossings, and (c) keeping corridors open when settlements expand.

Where the numbers stand—and what they imply

Gujarat announced results of the 16th lion estimation in May 2025: 891 lions (up from 674 in 2020), reflecting both demographic recovery and range expansion into 11 Saurashtra districts.
